Job Description:
Mechanical Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME) who will manage, review, coordinate and provide key technical input during site due diligence, detailed design and/or construction administration phases of multiple datacenter projects on a global scale and be part of the core team launching the Microsoft Cloud infrastructure worldwide. Responsible for leading and directing consultants in the design and coordination of the mechanical systems, associated controls and overall topology aligning with Microsoft and site-specific requirements.
Responsibilities
Subject Matter Expert providing key input to other organizations and internal stakeholders. This position requires a detailed understanding of datacenter HVAC systems, cooling equipment selection, plumbing systems, fire protection systems, fuel systems, Building Automation System (BAS) controls and related operational experience.
The SME will be responsible for
Design decisions related to data centre projects including new construction, expansions, retrofits and upgrades and standards upgrades globally.
Critical assessments of designs and decisions and support in applying the required standards and country-specific regulations to make the best design choices.
Engage and manage external design consultants, run design workshops to ensure they deliver a design to meet the requirements of the Basis of Design (BOD).
Collaboration with Global Technical Excellence team, Global Strategy team and DC Operations teams to develop datacenter designs from Basis of Design (BOD) to Issue For Construction (IFC) and through the Construction Administration phase of the datacenter until handover for new project build outs.
Some travel to sites for “Factory Witness Testing”, consultant/vendor interaction in the design process, as well as for final commissioning of the installed systems.
Collaboration with internal and external customers, lead the direction of the mechanical designs and oversee the delivery of multiple, concurrent, complete datacenter design solutions aligned with scopes, schedule and budgets of the projects.
Supporting requests, liaise with customers to develop specific project design requirements, liaise and collaborate with other Microsoft engineering teams and Operations providing support as and when required for new and existing data centres.
Qualifications
Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
Professional Engineer in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 10 years experience in mission critical projects with in-depth knowledge and understanding of mission critical environments
Candidate must possess strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail and maintain high quality standards
Excellent knowledge of building codes and regulations
Preference is for experience working in high critical environment projects
Ability to prepare and present using MS office packages
Minimum of 10 years’ experience in consulting engineering with minimum of 7 years’ experience as lead engineer
Ability to lead a team of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large data center environments
Ability to manage, prioritize and successfully execute multiple concurrent mission-critical infrastructure projects
Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions
Excellent analytical and organizational skills
Excellent problem solving, judgement, team building and decision-making skills
Able to travel domestically and internationally
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
10 years experience in mission critical projects with in-depth knowledge and understanding of mission critical environments
Registered Professional Engineer in Mechanical Engineering
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
