We are experiencing exponential growth in our presence in Canada. In 1998, it was awarded for the construction, operation, and maintenance project for the Fredericton-Moncton Highway. In 2011, it was awarded a section of the Toronto-York Spadina Subway extension, the first modern subway infrastructure project in the city. This project was completed in 2018.
FCC Construcción Canadá has won a new contract to deliver the Pape Tunnel and Underground Stations section of the Ontario Line, together with the GO Rail Expansion-On Corridor Project and the Scarborough Subway Extension Stations, Rail and Systems Project reinforces FCC Construcción’s presence in the Canadian market.
Project Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Tunnel Estimator to join our FCC Canada team assigned to Pape Tunnel and Underground Stations Project.
Reports to: Estimating Lead
The Tunnel Estimator's key responsibilities are:
- Familiarity with TBM tunneling, cross-passages, SEM tunneling, TBM launch shaft and site setup, muck handling and treatment, and working under existing TTC box conditions.
- Utilize Hard Dollar estimating software to ensure the precision of bid costs.
- Analyze documents, drawings, specifications, and proposals to prepare accurate pricing.
- Conduct site visits prior to price preparation to gather necessary information.
- Collaborate with Operations staff to obtain input and ensure comprehensive estimates.
- Perform quantity take-off from construction drawings where applicable.
- Support the procurement process by obtaining pricing from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Formulate comprehensive costs for tender submissions, including labor, equipment, materials, rentals, and subcontracts.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of risks relevant to the scope of the work.
- Manage the handover process upon project award.
- Maintain organized files and correspondence for active and completed tenders.
- Contribute to project success and learning through effective communication and collaboration.
- Ensure compliance with estimation processes and procedures for consistency and accuracy.
- Assist with post-bid and post-project Analysis completion and facilitate associated learning and communication.
- Adhere to the project's risk management policies and procedures.
- Foster positive relationships with Clients, Consultants, and key subcontractors.
- Uphold confidentiality and protect proprietary information.
- Maintain the estimation data systems to ensure they are up-to-date.
- Be stationed on major projects as required.
Education and Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field is preferred.
- 5–10 years of progressive estimating experience in civil construction, track, buildings, or related disciplines.
- Knowledge and/or experience in the rail and transit industry environment is advantageous.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access) is essential.
- Experience with estimating software, particularly Hard Dollar, is required.
- Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills for building positive working relationships.
- Understanding of site conditions impacting bid costs and constructability.
- Excellent listening and communication skills.
- Familiarity with various types of construction contracts, including cost-reimbursable, Target, and Guaranteed Maximum Price.
- Understanding of the job handover process, from estimation to operations.
Job Requirements
- Conduct thorough quantity take-offs and prepare bills of quantities (BOQs) independently.
- Prepare estimate packages for procurement based on respective responsibility areas.
- Review subcontractor's and suppliers' quotes obtained by the procurement group, adjust as necessary, and recommend final numbers to be carried in the estimate.
