About the opportunity
You will be paid while you train at FutureFit Academy and become a qualified tradesperson at BHP. These are permanent opportunities, and once successfully completing your studies, you will continue your employment with BHP based at one of our mine sites.
The Perth academy is currently offering Apprenticeships in Fabrication to commence in February 2025.
As a Fabrication Apprentice your training will involve a mixture of classroom/theoretical learning, as well as practical workshop training. In the classroom you will learn to read and create technical engineering drawings. Taking those technical drawings into the workshop to create the items using a combination of equipment such as; welders, grinders, drills and oxy acetylene torches. Over the duration of the course the curriculum will learn and refine skills in; Welding, Metal Shaping, Fabrication Techniques and Technical drawing.
Apprentices complete a 2 year training program in Perth, upon successful completion of the course you will receive a Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade (MEM30319) qualification and commence work at one of our mine sites. All training is undertaken at our training academy in Perth. While training you will be working a 7 Days / 7 Off / 7 Nights / 7 Off roster. Please note this is not a FIFO position and you will need your own transport to and from the Academy.
BHP has sites across Australia and it is important to understand that you may be required to relocate (including interstate) once you complete your training. This is based on demand for your trade or skillset across our mine sites.

About you
We’re looking for people from a broad range of backgrounds. Previous maintenance training is not necessary however you will have a genuine interest in fixing, repairing or tinkering. Ideally you will have proven examples of getting hands-on (through a hobby, or previous work experience) and a desire to learn more.
As these training programs contain fast-tracked learning, you will need to commit to attendance and have a personal situation and/or support network that will allow you to live local to the FutureFit Academy and work your training roster.
To set you up for success, you will need:
- A high commitment to safety is a must
- An interest in problem solving, fixing things and working with your hands
- A strong desire to learn and develop a range of new skills
- Motivation to achieve goals & enjoy a mixture of class room and hands-on learning
- Ability to live to live within 1 hours driving distance of the Academy in Forrestfield
- Ability to attend a roster that rotates across early mornings, evenings and weekends
- To have the necessary personal support networks available to assist you in working the above roster
- Experience working on machinery/vehicles through a hobby or work is highly regarded, but not essential
