Catherine, First EPB TBM launched on Sydney Metro Project

Published on July 20, 2023

I have an exciting update to share with you all about a significant milestone in the Sydney Metro — Western Sydney Airport project.

Yesterday 19/07/2023 the launch of a third Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) took place, a vital progression achievement in this huge project which is catapulting western Sydney into the modern era of infrastructure and transport.

The latest addition to this city-shaping project is TBM Catherine, a colossal machine currently deployed at Orchard Hills. Named after Catherine White, a relentless advocate against violence towards women in the Blacktown area,  TBM Catherine stands as a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and advocacy.

For those unfamiliar with Tunnel Boring Machines and the mining process, let me shed some light on this marvel of engineering.

TBMs like Catherine which was built by Herrenknecht are technological powerhouses designed for a very specific task — excavating through earth and rock to create the tunnels for the new metro lines.

This section of the project it is required that Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBMs are used due to the ground conditions.

EPB uses compressed air and soil conditioning foam that’s specifically designed to help maintain pressure to support the ground as it excavates.

This method of tunnelling can become very messy with wet muck leaving on the conveyors. It’s particularly useful when boring through various geologies like shale rock and clay where faults or unstable ground may be, prior testing has show these conditions will be common along the northern section of the line.

Each TBM is projected to excavate an impressive 120 metres a week.

Catherine will carve out one of the 4.3-kilometre tunnels from Orchard Hills to the new metro station site at St Marys. She will join her sisters, Eileen and Peggy, that are already constructing the 5.5-kilometre southern twin metro tunnels. And the convoy is set to grow, with a fourth and final TBM launching soon to work in parallel with Catherine.

The new metro line is more than just transport infrastructure; it’s a game-changer for greater Sydney. The development will make it easier for people to access job hubs, commercial and education facilities and other parts of Sydney’s public transport network.

The Sydney Metro — Western Sydney Airport line will be operational when Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) opens for passenger services. Imagine a travel time of just 15 minutes from St Marys metro station to Airport Terminal Station, and a further five minutes to Aerotropolis Station. That’s efficient travel and progress!

As we anticipate the positive changes this project will bring, I’d like to direct your attention to a unique opportunity to become part of this monumental venture. John Holland are calling for Expressions of Interest for Mobile Plant Operators for the Sydney Metro West — Eastern Tunnelling Package.

John HollandCPB Contractors, and Ghella are on the verge of commencing the design and construction work for this package. With a contract worth $1.63 billion, this involves constructing 3.5-kilometre tunnels under Sydney Harbour and excavating Pyrmont and Hunter Street stations. This project is the final piece to complete the city-shaping Sydney Metro West project, which aims to double rail capacity between Greater Paramatta and the Sydney CBD.

Working as part of a team, you will operate heavy moving equipment to conduct excavation and civil works. It’s an opportunity not just for employment, but for making a real impact in the industry and being part of a project that will upgrade the lives of countless Australians.

Interested applicants should have:

  • a strong understanding of OH&S site compliance requirements
  • operating licenses for various heavy equipment
  • a Construction White Card
  • HR Driver’s License
  • Preferably, 3–5 years’ experience in a similar operator position.
  • Tunnelling experience would be an added advantage.

At John Holland, they understand that your career is one of the biggest ways to have an impact on the world. From industry-leading leave policies to wellbeing and relationship support, on offer is competitive remuneration with salary continuance, flexible working options, and ample opportunities for career progression.
